ABOUT YOU
Therapy is about you!
By its very nature, therapy is about you. Psychotherapy is not easily described in general terms, as it is unique to you as a client. We hope our site helps you better get to know us and our approach to therapy
At MAPS, we utilize a number of different approaches and techniques to help with the issues you wish to address. Together we will create a specific treatment plan tailored to your particular needs and goals. Psychotherapy is a collaborative process that involves active effort on your part. The success of therapy will depend in large part on the effort you put forward during and outside of our sessions. You can also expect your therapist to work hard too: being fully attentive in session, listening deeply, and providing feedback and support on your therapy journey.
Good communication between client and therapist is also key. If at any time during therapy you have questions, concerns, or reactions to something your therapist has said, please do not hesitate to bring this up. In fact, addressing such questions and/or concerns often strengthens the therapeutic relationship and improves the outcome for you.
Psychotherapy is an intensely personal process that can have both benefits and risks. Because therapy often involves discussing difficult aspects of your life, you may experience uncomfortable emotions such as sadness, anger, guilt, frustration, fear, and loneliness. These uncomfortable emotions are often signs of progress.
Research has shown that psychotherapy can have many benefits, such as increased awareness of the interaction between one’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors; better relationships with oneself and others; solutions to problems; and significant reduction in feelings of distress. Given the complex nature of psychotherapy, it is important that you know there are no guarantees as to what each individual patient will experience. What we can guarantee is a commitment to providing a safe, supportive, and accepting environment in which we work together to achieve your goals for therapy.
